The Historia von D. Johann Fausten tells the story of a sixteenth century theologian who trades his soul to the devil in order to "speculate the elements" (H 22) and enjoy a luxurious life.
In 1587 a chapbook “Historia von D. Iohan Fausten” was published about the sins of Faust, and was soon translated into English, where it inspired Christopher Marlowe. Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, was studied by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (who may also have read the German version), and the legend of Faust grew.

Gemessen an meinem damaligen Eindruck wäre es höchste Zeit für eine Re-Lektüre, denn der Text hat mir recht gut gefallen. Der Faust des Volksbuches hat noch nichts vom ambivalent strebenden Erkenntnismenschen, wie ihn später Goethe inszenieren wird.
