He died on May 21, 1786 in Koping, Sweden. Scheele was the son of a German merchant but he was born in the part of Germany that at this time was under the Swedish jurisdiction. Carl Wilhelm Scheele is said to be one of the most important chemists of the 18th century. From a young age he had shown an interest in pharmacy and chemistry. Carl became a member of the Swedish Academy of Science in Stockholm where he discovered various chemical elements and compounds. Carl Wilhelm Scheele. Scheele, Carl Wilhelm, född 9 eller 19 december 1742, död 21 maj 1786, kemist, från 1775 apotekare i Köping. Scheele framställde och identifierade före Priestley syre som ett specifikt kemiskt ämne och visade – oberoende av Lavoisier och Priestley – att luft inte är ett grundämne utan sammansatt av syre och kväve.
